THE GRADING OF HEMP.

MILLERS DISSATISFIED. NEW SYSTEM DESIRED. [BY TELEGR'APH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PALMEJRSTON NORTH, Thursday. The New Zealand Flaxmillers' Association discussed the allegedly unsatisfactory conditions governing flax grading. Mr. Ross remarked that it would be unnecessary for members to give their own experiences. for without doubt all agreed that something needed to he done. What was necessary was to devise some method to improve the conditions, and to that end he moved the following resolution : "That, owing to universal dissatisfaction in connection'with the hemp grading system, the said system being dependent on the personality of the graders, more especially the chief hemp gracler, the department be requested to set up an independent committee: (1) To report to the Minister in charge of the hemp department, from evidence obtained or suggestions made, with the object of arriving at a system of grading so that the personal element will lie eliminated as much as possible; (2) that the basis of setting standard grades be as required by the consumers; (3) generally to make New Zealand hemp more attractive to the consumer; (4) to consider the advisability of offering a substantial bonus to improve present manufacturing methods." The other associations are to bo approached for support.
