MAIN HIGHWAYS ACT.
POWERS OF THE BOARD. NEED FOR RESTRICTION URGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. The Main Highways Board recently took over a portion of the main south road between Ohinewai and Tatipiri from the Waikato County Council, laying it down in permanent material and consequently demanding a higher rate than that imposed by the council. At the meeting of the Rural Counties' Association at Hamilton to-day members viewed with concern the action of the Highways Board in over-riding the Waikato County Council, and suggested that an inquiry be set up to see whether the ratepayers concerned could afford to pay the additional hate. The principle of the whole matter was considered wrong. It was resolved to urge that the Main Highways Act be amended to restrict the power of the Highways Board to enforce payment of a county's quota until after receipt of a recommendation from the local district highways council in •favour of such payment.
