MR. COATES' FIRST ELECTION.
Sir, —In the Hebaijd of the 19th inst.. in the report of the Prime Minister's visit to his electorate, Mr. F. A. Jones is reported to have stated that he and others waited on Mr. Coates and persuaded him to be nominated as Parliamentary candidate. 1 have always maintained that I selected our present Prime Minister. The gentlemen who ultimately worked for Mr. Coates' return to Parliament' ware endeavouring to get the late Mr. Donald Finlayson to stand, but on ray discussing the matter with the late Mr. John Birch, afterwards general valuer in the Bay of Plenty, who was one of Mr. D. Finlayson's chief supporters, I convinced him that Mr. Coatet; would ne a more suitable representative for the matter we had under consideration. Wo therefore approached Mr. 'Coates, who consented to stand. Mr. Birch then took an active part in the campaign which placed Mr. Coates on the road to fame. T. J. Baker.
