EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS
RETURNS FOR 24 WEEKS. INCREASE IN TOTAL PROFIT. NEW TARIFF IN OPERATION* [BY - TELEGRAPH.—OWM CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. A working profit of £85,587 is shown by the Railway Department's working account for the four weeks ended September 12. For the corresponding period of last year, the profit was £80.253. The new tariff came into operation on August 31, and therefore affects the receipts for half the period. The receipts comprised £326,755 from the North Island railways, £206,944 from the South Island, and £35,246 from miscellaneous services, the total of £568,945 showing ai: increase of £54.893 J over the corresponding period of last year. Expenditure was £256,911 in the North Island, £205.571 in the South Island, and £20,875 in respect of miscellaneous services. The total, £483,358, shows an increase of £49,560. Following is a summary of the net revenue for the six periods of the current year: —
The net revenue for the first 24 weeks of last year 'was £456,220, so that the latest return shows an increase of £34,935. Including miscellaneous receipts, which were not 'shown separately until this year, the net earnings in the North Island for the corresponding period of 1924 were £379.682, while those in the South Island were £76,538.
