OIL SUPPLY SHORT.
POSITION IN AMERICA. MAGNATE'S GLOOMY VIEW. Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct, 1.1. An alarming situation exists in regard to the supply of natural petroleum oil in the United States, according to a statement made by Mr. Henry Doherty, president of the Dohcrty Oil Company, of New York, in an address to the convention of the American Gas Association at Atlantic City. Mr. Doherty denied the recent report of the American Petroleum Institute to "the effect that the nation's oil supply was adequate. He said a carefnl analysis of the report did not convince him that if another war broke out, even within three years, the United States would be certain to have a proper supply of available petroleum. Hie committee of the institute, said Mr. Doherty, had fallen back on the assurance of a supply from the Shale oilfields and the coal-beds, but it had been compelled to admit, in the same report, that if all the coal mined in 1924 had been used to make oil it would have produced barely more than 3 per cent, of the motor fuel required.
