NEW LYNN DISTRICT.
UPKEEP OF DETOUR ROADS. TOWN BOARD TO BEAR COST. The New Lynn Town Board met on Monday, the chairman, Mr. C. j;', Gardner, presiding. A communication was received from the Main Highways Board to the effect that as it had fixed a maximum sum for the construction of the Great North Road if con Id not. make any grant toward Ihe cost of upkeep of detour roads during the. construction of the main road. The question as to which roads should be detour roads would be a matter for the Town Board to decide. The Waitemata Electric Power Board ) asked permission to erect poles in the disj trict. Permission was granted, subject to terms of supply being arranged. The proposed controlling of local body loans was the subject, of a letter from the Christchurch City Council, which considered that local bodies themselves were capable of best knowing the requirements of their districts. It, objected to the Government putting any embargo on borrowing, but considered it would be good business for local bodies to pool their requirements and borrow as a combination. It was of opinion of the meeting that the Government had taken a right stand in endeavouring to put a check to rash borrowing. No action was taken in connection with the matter. The building inspector reported that during the previous fortnight four permits had been granted, the total value, being £2125. There were s lO houses, in course of erection. The foreman, Mr. J. H. Lawn, wrote tendering his resignation. Permission was granted the New Lvnn District Community Guild to _ho!d a procession on Labour Day when it proposes to hold a children's picnic.
