BOGUS SCIENTIFIC TRIP. TRAWLER ON A MUDBANK. LONDON. Sept. 28. A bogns scientific expedition to the Sooth Seas bad an extraordinary sequel when a Liverpool pilot boat rescued tho 50-foot trawler Confidence, which was drifting helplessly in the Mersey with three youths aboard, who allege that they paid a " Captain " Valentine £25 apiece to be allowed to take part in the voyage. It was stated by Valentine that ho held a master's certificate, but that when she left the wharf the Confidence drifted the wrong way—up the river. Valentine shouted, "Drop the anchor!" but it went to the bottom because it was not attached to anything. The crew spent 48 hours drifting in the Mersey, for part of the time stuck on a mudbank. Valentine and an associate, Jolly, were charged with having obtained money by false pretences.
