RELIEF OF BRITISH TRADE.
MAMMCTUBEES AROUSED CAMPAIGN FOR PROTECTION. EMPIRE GOODS MOVEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—^ Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Oci. S. The National Union of Manufacture* is launching a propaganda campaign j* order to demonstrate that a tariff on imported goods would be one of the remedies for the relief of British tradeThe union proposes to keep clear of all political parties. Instead it will rely apon trained lecturers on economics;, a statistical bureau and a publicity department. Sir John Corcoran, Director of Army Contracts, is to resign from the War Office in order to become a director of the anion, which is appealing for £20,000 a year for the next three years to enable it to carry on its campaign on behalf of protection. The Daily Telegraph publishes a leading article, entitled "Marketing Empire Goods." It pleads that the value of the Empire Exhibition may not be lost because of insufficient energy being shown in following np the exhibition. Many visitors, it says, would like to buy overseas goods, but often, these are not stocked in the shops. These complaints merit serious consideration in view of the recommendations of the Imperial Economic Committee that £660,000 should be spent in stimulating the demand "for Empiregrown goods. Already, ssays the paper, Indian tea.-growers are spending £90,000 a year in creating markets. It is useless to advertise Empire goods unless regularity of supply and easy marketing are assured. Market organisation must precede a publicity campaign, and the onus necessarily lies, to a large measure, with the overseas producers.
