CONTROL OF WHEAT.
DIVISION AMONG FARMERS. fri:e market advocated. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OAMARU, Tuesday. Tlie North Otago executive of the Farmers' Union discussed a communication from the Wheat Board, asking for an expression of opinion on the question of Government control of wheat for future years. Mr. D. Cameron stated that at a meeting in Christchurch the Canterbury executive had favoured Government control, subject to endorsement by the branches. The chairman asked what Government control meant and Mr. Cameron said it appeared to mean that the Government would retain the duty on wheat. The chairman said if seemed to him that some farmers wanted a fixed price and also the advantage of any increases in values. They could not have it both ways. If things were going on as at present he was not prepared to attend further conferences. Mr. Cameron stated that the farmers in Canterbury were quite satisfied with the present prices. Nothing definite in regard to future arrangements would be known for a few days. Mr. Ruddenklau expressed surprise that the agreement had not already been fixed up. He could not understand farmers refusing to sign. Mr, Cameron pointed out that the whole matter had been dealt with by the delegates. The Wheat Board had nothing to do with it. Mr. R. Walker said they appeared to have the wheat question, like the poor, always with them. Personally ho fav oured a free market for wheat. The chairman stated that there were a good many others coming to this way of thinking. After further discussion the matter was allowed to drop, no resolution being passed.
