BURGLAR CAPTURED.
RANSACKING CITY HOUSE. NEIGHBOURS GIVE ALARM. NEAT COUP BY DETECTIVES. Surrounding a house in Havelock Street last evening, a posse of detectives surprised a burglar in the act of ransacking the dwelling and caught him as he fled from a side door after they had made their presence known. The house, which is on the right-hand side of the short street which runs from Symonds Street to Wynyard Street, is the residence of Mr. J. G. H. Mackay, dentist, who, with his family, was temporarily absent. Neighbours heard movements in the house and immediately informed the detective office. As the house is only a short distance from the Central Police Station four detectives were quickly on the scene and taking up positions at points of vantage flashed a light in one of the windows to frighten out the intruder, who was moving about with a lighted candle. The mau immediately made a dash for safety emerging from a side door only to find himself in the grasp of a detective. The man was taken to the police station where it was learned that his name was William Howell. He was in possession of a bunch of keys and a pair of gloves, besides a sum of money. He will appear in the Police Court this znorning.
