ANCIENT ROCK CARVINGS.

GREAT NATIONAL MONUMENT. INVESTIGATION BY EXPERT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, ] ROTORUA, Tnesday. Mr. H. Hamilton, of the Dominion Museum, has returned from an examination of the rock carvings discovered on the Kaingaroa Plains. He states that the find is the most important discovery of the kind yet made in the Dominion. The carvings are of undoubted aboriginal origin. Their period is uncertain, but they are of considerable antiquity. The canoes are all depicted heading south and have peculiar construction features. The adornment contains single and double spirals. Mr. Hamilton says the relics are a great national monument. Dr. Buck will conduct further investigations on Thursday. Ethnological revelations are highly probable.
