WOMAN AND BEAUTY.

SOME USEFUL HOME-TRUTHS.

Women will learn a great many hometruths about themselves from a perusal of a new book by Cecil Webb-Johnston, "Woman and Beauty" (Mills and Boon, London). These troths are mostly old ones, but are presented in so interesting a manner that one seems to bo reading them for the first tii/.e. The author treats hi? compound subject, undoubtedly one of the oldest and most interesting in the world, from a sane and common-sense viewpoint, pointing out first of all that true beauty is ever allied to health, and thon showing how modern life and habits tend to wreck both these most precious qualities. The question of diet is fully dealt with, also the importance of exercise, while horrible pictures are drawn of the fate that awaits the girl who smokes fifty cigarettes a day and over-indulges in cocktails. , Other chapters which oontain much matter of interest to women are " Aids to Beauty "—not. the powder-and-paint variety—"Beauty and the Business Girl, and " Beauty and Happiness." And those who have neglected the simple rites of health in their youth will doubtless find a mournful interest in two other chapters containing some poignant truths, " Beauty in Middle-age " and " Beauty and Fat." Middle-age is inevitable, but tne spectre of its chief, attendant horror will be banished by all who have the patience and courage to follow out the instructions contained in his useful book.
