UNLOADING THE RUAHINE.
OPERATIONS COMMENCED. A SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. Cargo operations on the Ruahine, which arrived from London, via Wellington, on Monday afternoon, were commenced yesterday morning. It was intended to start on Monday evening, but the company was unable to obtain labour, although plenty was offering for pther vessels at the same time. Three gangs were engaged. Five were needed, but the Maheno and Katoa arrived in the morning and there was not sufficient labour to give full gangs to all three vessels. The Sussex, Kaikorai, Wainui and Niagara completed cargo operations last night and the men who were engaged on those vessels will be available to-day to make up any shortage on other vessels. The situation regarding the striking seamen is unchanged. The Waimana, Matakana and Zinal have all a shortage in their crews. The masters of the Ruahine and Kent announce that the shipowners are still prepared to honour the outstanding allotments of any members of the crews who resume duty.
