Proposed appropriations for buildings for educational purposes in the Public Works Estimates total £480.000, against £500,000 voted and £455,000 expended ' last year. : The principal items are:—Public i schools, £280,000; training colleges, . £50,000; technical schools, £60,000; , secondary schools, £150.000; universities, £100,000; native schools, £14,000; indus- - trial schools, etc., £10,500; schools for i feeble-minded, £ISOO. | THE MENTAL HOSPITALS. • AUCKLAND VOTE OF £20,000, LARGE SUM FOR PORIRUA. ; [BV TELEGRAPH. —SPEC)XL REPORTER. ] i WELLINGTON, Tuesday, i Expenditure proposed during the current. year on mental hospital buildings totals £188,040. Of this amount £20.000 ifc to be spent at Auckland, the amount expended last year being £2395. I Other large amounts are: —Jlokitika, £7700 Porirua, £77,000: Seacliff. £55.000; Stoke, Nelson, £25,000; Sunnyside, £11,000: Tokanui, £9700. , A grant of £793 is proposed for (he ; St. Helen's Hospital, Auckland. Last year's vote of £IO,OOO for the King George Hospital at Rotorua is reduced to £7OOO. only £29 being expended last year. The vote of £3047 for Motuihi quarantine station is reduced to £IOOO. THE TOURIST RESORTS. WAITOMO IMPROVEMENTS. ADDITIONS COSTING £IO,OOO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Votes proposed in the Public Works Estimates for the development of tourist resorts total £63,000. A similar amount was sot down last year but only £12,343 was expended. The item for additions at the Waitomo Caves hostel is raised from £SOOO to £IO,OOO and that for improvements from £250 to £2OOO. Various items at- Rotorua aro re-voted, in some cases the amounts being reduced. Improvements at Glade House and on the Milford Track are set down to cost £5500 and a launch and boats for Milford Sound, £550. The estimated amount required for public buildings throughout the Dominion during tho current financial year is £303,000, as compared with £321,000 last year, when £245,818 was spent. Details of the principal grants of provincial interest appearing on tho Punlio Works Estimates are as follow, reyotea of unexpended grants last year being omitted:— General.—Parliament buildings, - new wing (on account), £5000; Fanshawe Street Public Works Acps, Auckland, £4OO (£5273 expended last year); Public Works store and yards at Penrose (on account), £6500; accommodatian for agricultural officer, Paeroa, £llO ; Whakatane Courthouse, £1650. t'. Prison Buildings and Works,—-Auck-land, £1200; Auckland, metal-crushing plant, etc., £1500; Auckland, warders' cottages, £2000; North Island Borstal Institute, £2OCO (a reduction of £2OOO on last year's unexpended vote of £4000); Taupo prison farm land, buildings, roading ana development, £3500; Waikeria, £ISOO. Police Stations.—Edendale (site), £700; Point Chevalier (site and building), £2500; St. Heliers Bay (site and building), £2500 (£2OOO unexpended last year).
