YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK , BY ARCHER. It was very foggy at Ellerslie yesterday morning and this made it difficult to time tho early gallops, several of which were missed. Almost all the fast work was done on the No. 3 Grass, but several two-year-olds were galloped on the outside of the course proper. COURSE PROPER. Royal Tea defeated the Tea Tray—Lady Celia filly and the Shepherd King—Elegance colt over three furlongs in 38 4-Ss. The youngsters went irom a good move up and the first named did hia work nicely. NO. 3 GRASS, Broadwood. Sleepy Sol and King Cheops were in that order at the end of six furlongs in lm 21 l-ss. To Tahi ran six furlongs in lm 26 l-ss, while Town Bank and Wenday covered the same distance in similar time. Boomerday and Gala Day encompassed a round in lm 48s. Thev finished together. Romantic beat Piet over six furlongs in lm 23 2-ss. Scot Free ran four furlongs in 54 3-ss. Po'.onett defeated Arch Amio and Holymond over six furlongs in lm 22 3-ss. Cawnpore and Peach Brandy were on even terniß at tho end of four furlongs in 545. Sulla traversed five furlongs in lni Bs, Namutero running the same distance in lm 7 1-58. , , . Farndon and Archeno got over six lurlongs in lm 23 4-ss. Sir Archie went nicely for six furlongs in lm 21 l-ss. Right and Left and Lomint covering the same distance in lm 225. Peter Amans worked strongly over a distance and ran tho last round in lm 50s. He was assisted over the last four furlongs by Cuilgie. _ . Danae and Golden Sovereign covered a round in lm 52 l-ss. while Irish Jig took lm 6'2b ovor the same distance. Llewellyn did sound work over a distance. Qaincoma and Quinoria spurted throe furlongs in 40 3-ss. .... c c Princess Ronnie ran tho last four of nve furlongs in 54 l-ss. . Killute went four furlongs w 55 3s>s and Betty Bruce defeated Star Attraction by several lengths over six furlongs in lm 27 l-ss. Barometer comfortably beat Bute Sound over a circuit in lm 45 4-sb. The former did his work well and recordod the best gallop of the morning over this distance. Master Doon was going comfortably in front of Kameh&meha at the end of six furlongs in lm 23 2-ss. Wyoming decisively beat W. trail s Onesterfield filly over six furlongs m lm 22 3-ss. THE SAND. Passionate ran four furlongs in 545. THE JUMPERS. Zircon (W. Rennie) jumped four hurdles W Miss Bramble (Mr. Clune) and Persian King (E. Preston) went over two hurdles twice in satisfactory style. Persian King refused to jump on Saturday but the use of a atockwhip caused him to put some aaau into his work on this occasion. THE TURF IN" AUSTRALIA. HEROIC'S VICTORY. Melbourne papers now to hand furnish full details of the. victory registered by Heroic in the Memqje Stakes, run at Caulfield on the sth inst. The son of Valais was backed with such force and consistency down to 6 to 4 that it was made quite clear his party fully anticipated. that ho would reverse the running at Williamstown a week previously, when he was defeated by Whrttier. Heroic is credited with playing his part with marked brilliancy in the decision of the Meansie Stakes. He was always in command in the raoa down the straight, eventually winning ewiily by two lengths in fast time. Heroic ruled a warm favourite for the Csulfield Cup when the last mail to hand left Melbourxie. — • JDERBY FAVOURITE SCORES. Manfred, who is a prime favourite for the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies, was produced at Caulfield on the sth inst. to contest the Heathelea Handicap, which event was run over nine furlongs, and in which he was weighted at 7.13. The Derby favourite re-' corded what is termed, a sensational victory. At one stage of the contuet tho colt was thought to be in a hopehsss position, but he answeied the question in brilliant style when the demand was made on him, and he won his race in such style as to further brighten his prospects of proving himself the leading three-yearold of the season. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. The Hawk has been left in the Epsom Handicap ■(1 mile), in which he figures top weight with 10.0. He has, however, been entered for the Spring Stakes (H mileß), which event is set down for decision on the same day. The New Zealand gelding Pilliewinkie (9.7) figures among the acceptances for the Metropolitan Stakes, of £6OOO (1 mile and 5 furlongs), to be run on the second day of the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, which takes place at Randwick on October 5. , The Auckland-owned gelding Cherry Ripe figures among the entrants for both the hurdle and steeplechase events which are set down for decision at the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting next month. The three-year-old Diogenes, who was transported from New Zealand to Australia last month, is reported to be training on Satisfactorily. The English-bred stallion Shepherd King died recently at the Woodlands Stud (New South Wales). In 1916 Shepherd King won the Caulfield Cup, and he went close to also winning the Melbourne Cup, in which race he beat all his opponents with the exception of the New Zealand gelding Sasanof. Mr. E. G. Blume bought Shepherd King in 1918 for 3500gns. His stock have won nearly £40,000 in stakes. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. AVONDALE .JOCKEY CLUB. First payment for the Avondale Cup and acceptances for the minor handicap events to be run on the opening day of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting close on Fridav next, at 5 p.m., with the secertary, Mr A. J. Fatauhar. wanganui' notes. [BY TELEGBAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI. Tuesday. ' Some good judges who witnessed the race for the Wanganui Guineaa were not greatly impressed with the winner. Father O'Flynn. and they offer the prediction that the son of Paper Money will see two or three of the same age develop better form as the season advances. Aucklanders who witnessed the racing here declare that Ripon Abbey will defeat Father O'Flynn when" they meet. Mimetio is a colt. that should be heard of in the near future. The son of Comedy King want 3 a race or two to sharpen him up, and then, he will prove himself one of the best of his age. Alaric must be given credit for running two good at the Wanganui meeting. In the decision of the Marangai Handicap (1 mile 130 yds.). he beat all his field with the exception ot The Banker, to whom ho was conceding Sib., and it was only a question of a neck between the twain. The Higgie Handicap (1J mile) saw a welldeserved win go. down to the credit of Alaric. who carried 8.13 home in front of Shining Armour (7.0) and eight others. A mile and a-half journey appears a bit too far for Alaric, otherwise he would have a rare chance in the Avondale Cup with 8.3. Still, his condition is so good that such may be expected to assist him to see out ths ( twelve furlongs attached to the race referred to. > Star Stranger should be hard to beat in his engagements at Avondale. He was unlucky in the contest for the Maiden Race here R. Reed is to ride Mimetic and Rapine in their Avondale engagements. Rapine should strip in good order if started in the Avondale Cup. He galloped well enough here to show that he is not far off his best. . First Acre. ' winner of the Maiden Race at Wanganui.. should score again soon. He is a nice-looking colt, and has a good deal of pace. Dress Circle is a filly that some Wanganui punters will be on when she makes her next appearance in public. There was a lot of bumping in the Durje Hack Race, and one of the chief sufferers was Bonhomme. Ho will be hard to beat in his engagement at the Otaki ,meeting. Euphonium Tends well in the Wallace Handicap at Otaki. The son of Elvsian -Trill have sharpened up after his racing here. Mr. A. M. Campbell. shon]d not be long in winning a race with FilMte. judging by the way the daughter of Boniform was going at the end of the Durie Hack. Indian Sage ia going to prove very fast over a short distance, even if he does not stay. H« was going great guns at the finish of the Durie Hack Race after being in a boneless position at the bottom of the Btr"! - -' Beacon Light was taken, ont of . the Wanganui Guineas owing to being amiss a couple of days before the race. He is now all rieht again. . Pa'ham has. been doyig. £rood work since he has been in Wanganui. the racing last week having done him good. He should be fit to do his best ,at Avondale.
