ROADING LOAN OPPOSED.

DECISION OF RATEPAYERS. A report of a meeting of ratepayers in the Turanga riding of the Manukau County to.discuss a proposal to raise a loan for roading purposes was received by the County Council yesterday. The loan proposal was outlined by Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman of the council, and by the riding member. It was proposed to raise a loan of £20,650 for the construction and metalling of the . main road from Maungaroa Bridge to Maraetai Wharf. This would involve an increaso in the rates of l£d in the £l, capital value. It was decided after lengthy discussion that no further action be taken in the matter. A motion that the council be asked to have a number of roads declared main highways was then discussed and carried. The metalling of the unmetalled portion of the main road near Maraetai' was considered, and a resolution was carried that a scheme be brought forward to provide a loan for the purpose.' ' A proposal that the council be recommended to increase the general rate sufficiently to provide funds to cut back points on the Maungaroa Gorge Road during the summer was lost on a show of hands.
