PATRIOTIC SPEECHES. RUSH FOR "WET" TERRITORY. WASHINGTON. July i. A great radio undertaking was used to-night to broadcast "Defence Day" speeches by the Vice-President, of America, Mr. Dawes, and other leaders, who were heard simultaneously in nearly every State. The demonstration came at the end of the Independence Day celebration, when an effort was made to enlist national interest in the importance of preparedness for war. Only 700,000 answered an appeal for so-called "one-day volunteers," but there were 6,000,000 participants in parades and other patriotic gatherings. In another sphere, however, Americans broke all previous records, as literally hundreds of thousands swarmed from their "dry" country into tho adjoining "wet" provinces of Canada, until trains and highways , were choked with dust-parched traffic.
