COMMERCIAL VEHICLES.
COUNTIES AND LICENSING. DEMAND FOR LEGISLATION. [BIT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHANGABEI. Friday. Tho Whangarei County Council some time ago instigated a movement aiming to have authority given to a county council to license motor vehicles used for hire or for commercial purposes under two tons laden weight. Mr. G. Newton, Assistant-Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, has written that the matter of introduction of legislation defining the words " plying for hire," appeared to be rather one for an amendment of the Counties Act than the Motor Vehicles Act as it was under the Counties Act the vehicles were licensed by county councils. Tho Minister had stated that he was prepared to favourably consider the making of provision dealing with the matter when an amendment to the Counties Act was being dealt with. It was not possible at the present stage to state whether an amendment could be introduced during the present session. The council is now urging that the amendment to the Counties Act should bo accomplished during the present session and requests have been made to the local bodies affected to support the council in its contention that the alteration in tho legislation is a matter ol urgency.
