AUCKLAND ELECTORS.
THE PROVISIONAL ROLLS. " DRIFT OF POPULATION. SUBURBS SHOW INCREASE. DECLINE IN TWO CITY AREAS. A return showing tho number of electors on,the provisional rolls of the eight Auckland electorates for which ho is registrar has been compiled by Mr. F. Evans. In pursuance of tho Legislature Amendment Act of last year, which mado the registration of electors compulsory, the enrolments wero commenced in January and the rolls aro complete to April 20. After deducting names removed from tho roll for various reasons tho net return of electors in each electorate is as follows : 1922. 1925. Inc. Auckland Central 9,816 0,742 1,104" Auckland Last . . 11,307 0,970 1,337* Auckland West . . 11,057 11,083 31 Larnoll . . . . 11,697 12,500 003 Waiteinata . . 11,171 12,334 1,163 lloskill . . . . 11,788 13,016 1,228 Oroy Lynn . . 10,813 11,630 817 Eden .. .. 9,331 11,719 2,380 Totals .. 87.010 90,999 3,909 * Decrease. It :in worthy of note that tho figures for 1922 included two supplcmontnry rolls, whereas those for this year are exclusive of supplementary returns. After the general, roll, which is now being prepared, has been jssned a supplementary roll will probably follow, but it is expected to be smaller than usual, as tho institution of compulsion has caused the provisional rolls to be much larger than in tho past. A comparison of tho figures of the two years provides an interesting indication of tho drift of population in the electorates. With the exception of Auckland Central and Auckland East the number of electors has increased in eacli case. Tho most substantial improvement has occurred in Eden, but the increases in Iloskill and Waiteinata also exceed 1000. This can bo traced to tho growing popularity of suburban settlement and the fact that it has been facilitated by. tho large number of subdivisions and improved means of transport. The deficit in tho two City areas is mainly attributable to tho steady forward trend of commerce and industry with the inevitable replacement of residential buildings by business premises. In Auckland Central, particularly, many residences have been replaced by offices, warehouses and factories and the former occupants are now living in tho suburbs.
