PROBATION NOT OBSERVED, MAN SENT TO PRISON. "LIVING ON HIS MOTHER." A number of cases were heard before Mr. F, K. Hunt, S.M., in tho Polico Court yesterday. " I know this man. He has been loaf, ing and living on his mother," stated Senior-Sergeant Edwards of William Wilson, aged 40. Mr, Hunt: Well, ho will not live on his mother for a month at any rate. Accused was sentenced to one month's, imprisonment for failing to comply with the terms rA his release on probation. For being helplessly drunk in Hobson Street on May IB accused-was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and for procuring liquor when prohibited he was fined 10s, in default 4& hours' imprisonment. COMMITTAL FOR SENTENCE. Five charges of indecently assaulting boys wero admitted by a grocer, Hugh Griffiths Parry, aged 42 (Mj, Sellar), in the Polico Court yesterday. Chief-Detective Cumraings said the accused had agreed to accept, the written statement made by the boys in order to avoid calling them to give evidence. Tho statements were produced by Detective O'Brien. 'Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence. > In response to Mr. Sellar's application for suppression of the najnc, Mr. Hunt said accused had pleaded guilty to one of tho gravest offences in the criminal code, r.nd until the law directed him to suppress the .names of this class of offender he would not do so. The application was refused, as was also a request* for accused's release on bail. " I do not think this sort of man ought to bo at largo," the magistrate remarked. STREET ASSAULT CASE. An assertion that accused was only defending himself from a man Hapuka was voiced by Mr. Fennell on behalf of Gerald Fitzgerald, aged 30, who pleaded " guilty under great provocation," to a charge of fighting in High Street on Saturday. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said accused's opponent had escaped. Nothing was known against accused. Fitzgerald was convicted and discharged. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. " A cleaning up" was recommended by the senior-sergeant for William Postlewaite, aged 56, who admitted being idlo and disorderly with no lawful means of support. " Yes, he could do with one," replied ' Mr. Hunt. "Fourteen days." V/ YOUTH DRUNK IN STREET. "You have no right to go into an hotel at your age," said Mr. Hunt to Charles Alexander Dickey, aged 19, who denied charges of drunkenness in Victoria Street and use of obscene language on Saturday. A constable stated that accused swore violently when arrested for insobriety. Accused, who said he was a seaman, was fined 5s for drunkenness and £1 on the second charge. A SERIOUS CHARGE. The suppression of the name of a man, aged 50, charged with indecently assaulting a girl was ordered. A remand for a week was made, accused being granted bail of £2OO and ordered to report daily to tho police. YOUNG MAN REMANDED. Applying for a remand until next 'Monday ii\ the case of George Thomas Nelson, aged 26, charged with obtaining £3 10s 6d from J. E. Hill by means of a valueless cheque for £9, Chief-Detective Cummings intimated that further charges were pending. Bail of £IOO was granted. ONEHUNGA COURT CASES. TWO MEN FINED FOR ASSAULT. " Two young men, Thcophilus Smith and Noel Brennan, wero charged in the Onehunga Police Court. yesterday, before Messrs. J. E. Cowell and J. Lakine, J.P.'s, with drunkenness and assault. They pleaded guilty to drunkeness and not guilty to assault. E. G. Castell stated he was talking near the Club Hotel when Smith approached and used abusive language. When he remonstrated the accused knocked him down, but he gave no provocation whatever, and had never seen either of the accused before. E. Stringer, who witnessed the affair, said that when Brennan joined in the assault ho did. not intervene because he thought he was going to separate the complainant and the accused, wiho wero then on the ground together. Ho identified both the accused, and two ladies also identified them Constables Poll and Johnson gave evidence that they arrived after tho assault. Both tho accused were drunk. Fines of 10s each were imposed on the first charge and £1 each on the second, with costs 17s 6d.
