PRISON FOR * BEGGING. TERM OF THREE MONTHS. ANOTHER CHANCE DECLINED. A lengthy list of cases"was dealt with by Mr. J. W. Poyntori, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. A statement that if given a chance he would go to work was made by William Wright, aged 53, who denied being an idle and disorderly person in that he placed himself in Queen Street for the purpose of begging. It was useless to give accused a chance, said the magistrate. He had already served terms of imprisonment for similar offences. He would be sentenced to three months' imprisonment. ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. Two charges of false pretences were brought against John Thomas Scott, aged 29 (Mr. Sullivan). It was alleged he obtained £1 from each of two men by representing that he was the second engineer of the Marama, and that he roquired the money to pay their union fees before signing them on the steamer's articles. He was remanded until next Thursday, bail of £SO being fixed. OBSCENE LANGUAGE CHARGE. Seven days' imprisonment was imposed on William Cant, aged 51, for using obscene language in Broadway on Tuesday. He was fined £3, in default seven ! days' imprisonment for committing a grossly indecent act in Khyber Pass Road, and was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Sergeant Roweil said accused was arrested for indecency and used obscene language to the arresting constable. CONVICTION FOR ASSAULT. Assault on a person nnknown was alleged against a coloured man, Christopher Rozairo, aged 22. Accused was seen to strike a companion twice on the jaw with his fist outside the Waverley Hotel, stated Sergeant Rowell. The man assaulted disappeared in the crowd that gathered, and he had not been traced. Accused said he was called a "bad name" by the other man. He was convicted and discharged. ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. A further remand until next Thursday was granted in the case of Edward Alexander Mummery, alias Seaton, aged 47 (Mr. A. Moody), charged with deserting his wife at Henley Beach, • South Australia, on January 17. Chief-Detective Cummings said accused's escort would arrive in the meantime. Bail was allowed. STOWAWAYS ON AORANGL Two Fijians, Joe Rogers, aged 25, and William Valentine, aged 19, were charged with stowing away on the Aorangi at Suva on February 21, and a similar offence, at Honolulu, on February 13, was preferred against an American, George Darmory, aged 50. In applying for a remand until next Thursday, Chief-Detective Cummings said the ship might take the men back. ' If so, they would be brought before the. Court in the meantime. The application was granted. TWO REMANDS GRANTED. A heavily-built man, Thomas Gunning, aged 46, who was in a very nervous condition, was remanded for a week for medical treatment on a charge of being helplessly drunk in Princes Street on Wednesday. • Two charges of indecently assaulting a male at Rotorua, on February 17. and at Papatoetoe, on March 6, were preferred against a man aged 24, whose name was suppressed. He was remanded until next Thursday, bail of £2OO being allowed. A CASE DISMISSED. "It would be stretching the law to convict him. Intention is not sufficient for a conviction," said the magistrate in dismissing a charge aginst Thomas Larkin Richardson, aged 70, of assaulting a five-year-old girl at Newmarket. A plea of not guilty was entered. On a charge of drunkenness, to which ho pleaded guilty, accused was convicted and discharged.
