OBITUARY.

MRS. ELIZABETH SMITH. IN DOMINION 82 YEARS. [J The death has occurred of Mrs. Elizabeth Sarah Smith, one of the ..early pioneers of the Ohinemuri district. Mrs. Smith, who was 94 years of age, was bora at Penzance, England, and carne to New Zealand with her parents when 12 years of age, so that she had been in the country 82 years. She was married at the scendants, 166 of whom are great-grand-children and four great-great-grandchildi-ron. MR. E. H. C. SANDERS. The death occurred at Russell on Tuesday of Mr. Edwin H. C. Sanders, father of "the late Lieutenant-Commander William E. Sanders, V.C., D.5.0., R.N.R. Mr. Sanders, who was 72 years of age, was formerly a well-known resident of Takapuna, but latterly had been living in retirement at the Bay of Islands. His son rendered conspicuous service while in command of one of the mystery ships of the British Navy, and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was killed on August 14, 1917, as a result of the vessel on which he was serving being blown up. One of the father's most-prized possessions, in addition to the Victoria Cross, was _ a personal letter from the King, in which His Majesty stated it was a matter of sincere regret that the death of Lieuten-ant-Commander Sanders had deprived him of the pride of personally conferring upon him the Victoria Cross, the greatest of all rewards for valour and devotion to duty. The Cross was later handed to the lat« Mr. Sanders by Lord Jellicoe at an impressive ceremony in the Auckland Town Hall in June, 1918. The funeral of Mr. Sanders will leava the residence of his niece, Mrs. G rims tone, 51, Marlborough Street, Dominion Road, at 10.15 am. to-morrow for O'Neill* Point Cemetery.
