TROTTING.

OTAHtJHU CLUB'S MEETING. ORION WINS THE CUP. SOME SURPRISE VICTORIES. The Otatuhu Trotting Club's Summer Meeting tu opened on Saturday, and with the weather favourable a large concourse of racegoers was attracted to Alexandra Park, the number present being well up to the beat previous record at a corresponding day at the popular Epsom ground. As a result of recent rains the race-track was in a dead state, and fast records were not looked for. Large fields were a feature of tbe day, and everything passed off most pleasantly. The arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. R. L. Absolum, for tho management of the meeting worked out admirably, and with the events started well up to time the outing was rendered most enjoyable. The chief stipendiary steward, Mr. H. T. Davey, was present. Prior to the contest for the opening event—the Trial Handicap—and while the contestants were parading the birdcage, Mr. .Davey noticed that G. H. Stubbs, the driver of Master Bill, held a whip without a keeper and with steel showing. The whip was ordered to be delivered up. After tha race Stubbs was called before, the stewards for an explanation, when he pleaded ignorance. Tho stewards imposed a fine of £2 for the breach. The leading event of the programme—the Ot&huhu Cup—brought out of 13; and Mr. J. R. McKenrie's bracketed pair, Acron and Lighinin', wa3 the popular selection, with Orion and Audacious most fancied of the others. Orion went out to make tho pace, and he carried the field along attractively. When the last six furlongs came to be undertaken Audacious wa3 trying hard to head the Australian gelding,, but Orion was well clear again at the back stretch. First Carbine rolled into hia task with marked vim in the concluding stage; but Orion always had the. best of his Auckland rival, and a decisive victory went down to Orion's credit. 'lne winner is a moderate-sized stallion, owned by the New South Wales sportsman, Mr. W. J. Carter. P. Riddle, who trained and drove Orion, had a similar record in the two preceding years, Sheik and Delavan Quest, respectively. After the race the handsome gold cup, which formed the trophy was presented. The Minister for Marine, Hon. G. J. Anderson, made a happy speech in congratulating the winning trainer and driver, and Mrs. Anderson handed the cup to Mrs. Riddle amid cheering. The two back-markers. Realm and Man-o'-War. each had their chances settled by unexpected incidents- at different stages. Shortly after the start Wood vale broke, and as he came back Realm could not avoid a collision. Man-o'-W ar was well up when the concluding six furlong 3 came to be undertaken, but he met trouble a little further on, and had completely settled his prospects of securing • a place among the place-goiters. The surprise victories were registered respectively by Rock Hinton and Lord Nepean. In the decision of the Tamaki HandicaD Rock Hinton. who figured four- , teenth in the order of the betting. s c °red from another outsider in Kingsclere, Lord Nepean brought off his surprise m the , Papakura Handicap. The totalisator investments during the day amounted to £53,376 10s. compared with £50.652 10s on the corresponding day last year—an increase of £27-4. DETAILS OF THE RACING. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. [BY TELEGB^PH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Saturday. The fourth annual general meeting of the Northland Trotting Club was held at Whangarei on Friday evening, the president, Mr. J. J. Brake, occupying the chair. The attendance vras a record for the club. The chairman said it was pleasing to see so many taking an interest in light harness sport, and the utility horse. While the club was undoubtedly entitled to permits for two days, it was gratifying to know that it had got something. The balance-sheet and treasurer's report showed the finances to bo in a healthy condition. * _ The following officers we're elected:—Patrons. the Hon. J. G. Coates and Messrs. A. J. Murdoch and Allen Bell. M.P.; president, Mr. L. J. Brake; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. M. Simons and E. A. McMabon; treasurer, Mr. H. W. Crawford: auditor, Mr. W. A. Parker. Tho following were appointed to fill vacancies on the committee; Messrs. McCardle, Armstrong, Tierney, and Schon. The matter of a date for tho meeting was left to the committee. A special meeting is to bo held within 14 days to consider a motion to alter the maximum number of members from 350 to 500. CANTERBURY NOTES. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A. Fleming has Locanda Mac looking particularly well, and the Auckland Trotting Cup winner should race prominently the next time he ia etepped out in public. The American trotter, Lee Norris, has ben fired and he» will be given a good spell. If this does xioqt cure his unsoundness he will be retired ta the stud. Lee Norris showed promise at one stage of hi 3 career of developing into a champion, but he has not come up to expectations. Had he been thoroughly sound ?bere nfight have been a different story to tell. Most of P. Riddle's team are restricted to easy tasks at Addington, as they arv very forward. Sheik, who has not raced sa recently as the others, is being kept busy .and he should be in great fettle for the Easter Meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. The American mare brought here by the late C. James, has again changed hands, P. Gregg having solct her to a patron of E. Berry's stable. Logan Lou is doing steady work, but sho looks very much on the big side, and it is almost certain she will not be ready to race at Easter. . Native King appears to be at his best, so far as condition is concerned, but hi 3 performances in training are not impressive. The trotter looks like giving P. Riddle plenty to think about to get him to his best speed. Delavan Guest is in steady work again. He has freshened up after his spell and should not take long to be brought to his b< Napland is trotting well in his work, but his last effort in a race was most disappointing. Possibly he felt the effects of travelling to Dunedin. Bell Harold looks very well, but he was evidently not pleasing his trainer, as at the last minute Tomkinson decided not to take him to Auckland A Cox has George Grafton going wonderfully well. The fast but erratic pacer.seems to have become much more steady in his training and he goes well now even without the hopples. He will be Taced at the J«ew Brighton Club's Meeting. . The trotter. Nelson Bell, is still enjoying a sDell in tho paddock, but A. Cox intends bringing him in again shortly and P e , ltl "S him ready for races near tho end of the Be ße°bel looks well and has a fino turn of aneed but the paccr docs not seem too re- : liable' in his races. He comes on quickly and trains off equally as fast.
