ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. 'I he Auckland provincial athletic championships will bo decided at. the Domain on March 7, when several handicap events will also be. decided. Entries for tho meeting close on Friday with the honorary secretary, at 32, Albert Street. Had the Dominion championships been held here, it is safe to state Ihe local team would have made a good showing against, tho southern cracks. No official team is being sent to Wanganui by the centre, but. it is probable that Messrs. Douglas and Herbert (cyclists), O. J l '. Paltridgo (sprints), and J. W. Harvey (jumps), of the Gisborne Club, and E. I. Grant (cyclist), T. M. Wilson (distances), J. W. Shirley (jumps). F. Nesdalo (hurdles), and N. J. Finlayson (hurdles), of Auckland, will compete in the colours of the province next Friday and Saturday at Wanganui. When in Auckland last week the Australian athletes wore taken to the Domain Cricket Ground, where they indulged in training work. Yesterday a. letter was received by Mr. A. Tilly, president, of tho Auckland Centre, from the captain of tho visitors, expressing regret that tho team could not appear at the Domain. He was confident, that, given fair weather conditions, tho members of the team would probably register some record performances. In 1900-1901 season the late W. T. Macpherson, of New South Wales, ran 100 yds. in 9 4-55.. equalling the then world's record, and he won the 250 yds. championship in 24 3-,55., which is still tho world's amateur record. In addition he secured the 440 yds. New Zealand title in 50 2-55., which stood for many years as the Dominion record. These times were made on the Domain, and the present visiting athletes arc so pleased with the track that they earnestly desire to appear here at a carnival.
