MR. H. H. STERLING'S CAREER. SERVICE IN THE RAILWAYS. Mr. H. H. Sterling, whose appointment as a member of the board of management of the New Zealand Railways is announced, is a native of Christchurch, where he was educated at primary schools and the Christchurch Boys' High School. He joined the railway service in 1901, and after qualifying in telegraphy, was transferred to the country. For the next sis years he was at various stations in Canterbury and at Lyttelton and Christchurch. He was "exchanged"' to Oamaru in 1907 and after a short period there he was transferred to Dunedin, where he became officer in charge of the telepraph branch. While there he did relieving work until he was transferred to the traffic superintendent's office at the end of 1908. Duri.ig his stay in Dun&din Mr. Sterling passed the medical preliminary examination. Turning his attention to law he qualified as a solicitor in 1913 and barrister in 1917. graduating as LL.B. at. Ot-ago University. He was transferred to the head office in 1918, and was appointed law officer in the following year. He relieved Mr. Mac Donald. assistant general manager, when he went to Australia in 1923, and was appointed second assistantgeneral manager in the beginning of 1924, holding that position until appointed to his present position.
