RAILWAYMEN'S UNION.
internal administration. ALMOST A NEW EXECUTIVE. [BY TEI.EORAPH. PRESS A SSOCIA HON*. ] WELLINGTON. Friday. The subject of keenest public interest on the agenda at. the recent, conference of the. Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was consideration of the attitude of the late national executive in calling a strike at Easter last year. It is understood that this topic gave considerable debate, and that opinion was fairly evenly divided on the question : also that a resolution was parsed which is tantamount to a. vote, of censure on the executive. lids would account, for the drastic changes made in iho personnel of the committee elected for this year, for out of eight members appointed, only three were member;! of last year's executive The vote of censure was recorded in the following resolution : —"'l he conference, alter lie icing tlie full facts, and bavin" had the. files in connection with the recent strike at its disposal, is of opinion that, the calling of the strike was not, justified by the eh eumstances existing at the time." The aMi tu r!«; of the Government, in re gard to hour> and wages before, flic sfrilm, and the subsequent reinstil ution of the 48 hours' week-, were abo discussed, and flic following motion was passed: "This conference, having bad all the files ami details its collection with the recent strike before it. and having full regard to the inadequate wage paid to the basic wageearner in the service at that time, strongly condemns I'm action of the (, iovernmerit for its attitude before and after the calling of the .strike." In view of the above resolutions, the result of the ballot, now in progress for the ele< lion of the president of the soc.ety will be awaited with considerable, interest. The candidates arc Messrs. iU. Connelly (retiring president), of Otago Central, and J-;., Hampton (a former president), who is now stationed at Wellington.
