MEDICAL CONFERENCE.
MEETING AT HERMITAGE. SUBJECTS FOR DISCUSSION.. PROVISION FOR RESEARCH. The annual conference of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association will open in Timaru on Satur-, day, and will be continued at tho Hermitage, Mount Cook, during the following week. The Auckland delegate's are Drs. W. H. Parkes, Neil McDougali, W. C. McCaw, and C. J. A. Griffin. Dr. A. S. Brawls will represent Hamilton. Several business meetings will be hold at Timaru on Saturday, and in the evening a civic reception will- bo accorded the delegates. The president-elect, Dr. P. W. Hislop, of Timaru, who succeeds Mr. Carrick Robertson as Dominion president, will then deliver tho annual address to the conference. Subsequently Dr. and Mrs. Hislop, with members of the South Canterbury division, will bo "at home" to the visitors. Delegates motor to Mount Cook 011 the following day. In all, some £OO members and their wives are expected'to make the trip. The whole of the accommodation at the Hermitage has been taken, but it will be severely over-taxed. Among subjects to be discussed at tho Hermitage is the necessity of the Gov eminent making adequate provision for medical research in New Zealand, a subject that has recently been given prominence in Auckland. The Government's attitude'toward tho proposed visit of tho American authority, Dr. McEachern, to report oh New Zealand hospitals will also be discussed, the association's view, as recently expressed by Mr. Carrick Robertson, being that Dr. McEachern should be asked to make an official report. The maternal mortality question will be introduced by Dr. Henry Jellett, of Christchurch, a world-wide authority who was formerly in charge of the famous Rotunda Hospital at Dublin. Tho sub ject of hospital policy will be opened by Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson, of Wellington Hospital, followed by Dr. 11. E. A. Washbouni, of Nelson. The early diagnosis of tuberculosis of the lungs, and later, home treatment will be discussed by .Dr. G. J. Blackmore, of Cashmere Hills Sanatorium, who will also speak on the policy of the Health Department in this connection. The DirectorGeneral of Health, Dr. T. H. A. Yalintine, will reply. Dr. Blackmore has had long and successful practice with this disease and has recently returned from a tour abroad, during which he investigated the Spahlinger and other treatmerit a Blood transfusion with special reference to its practice by the general practitioner will be the subject of a paper by Dr. J. A. Jenkins, of Dunedin, while Dr P. F. Lynch, of Wellington, will discuss modern methods of diagnosis. The programme generally is not so heavy as that at the conference in Auckland last year. Most of the meetings will be held in the evening, special sections making their own arrangements. The annual dinner will be held next Thursday evening, and meetings of the council in Timaru to-morrow and on Saturday. Tho New Zealand Women's Medical Association will meet at the Hermitage. Among distinguished visitors will be Dr. J. S.' Purdy, citv medical officer at Sydney. Dr. W. P. Emerson, of Boston, United States, who is interested in the nutrition of children, is expected to address the conference.
