NOTED SHIPOWNER.

VISIT OF LORD MACLAY, FORMER BRITISH MINISTER, FORTNIGHT IN DOMINION. Lord Maclay, the British shipping magnate, and late Minister for Shipping, arrived in Auckland yesterday from Sydney by the Ulimaroa. He is accompanied by Lady Maclay and his daughter, the Hon. Li lias Maclay. Lord Maclay,' who is purely on a health trip, spent about two weeks in Sydney. With his family he will leave Auckland to-morrow for Boto raa, then proceeding to Wellington where they will join the Maunganui for San Francisco on March 3. Lord Maclay is one of the most notable figures in the British shipping world. He was founder and is head of the shipping firm of Maclay, Mclntyre, and he was entrusted with some of the vast shipping responsibilities during the Clreat War. As a member of the historic War Cabinet of 1918, and as Minister of Shipping from 1918 until 1921, he performed iar-reaching national service. Created a baron in 1922, Lord Maclay was formerly a baronet, an honour bestowed on him in 1914. Two years later he was made a member of the Privy Council. He has been a magistrate of Glasgow and a Clyde trustee, and is one ol the foremost citizens of Glasgow. He is a prominent member of the United Free Church and for many years has acted as the honorary treasurer of the Orphan Homes of Scotland. He is also greatly interested in missions and in temperance work, and latterly has been prominent in his advocacy of prohibition. His two eldest sons were killed in the war.
