PIAKO COUNTY AFFAIRS.
decision of the council, THE KEREONE SETTLEMENT. [BE TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TE AROHA. Tuesday. Tho Piiiko County Council met on Monday, Mr. F. W. Walters presiding. » Tho 'bad state of the road between the Morrinsville Borough Boundary and the Waiharakoke Bridge was discussed and it was decided to call a meeting of ratepayers in the district concerned to learn whether they were sufficiently interested to sanction a loan. Dealing with the question of finance the chairman said that as a result of inquiries he was of opinion that for tho £53,000, the council required the best terms that could be obtained from one of the bank:.;. In regard to the proposal to have Thompson's Track made suitable for a stock route, it was agreed by Mr. Orr, in which riding the track is situated, to give all the rates collected from properties fronting tho track toward the cost of the work, and to make an application to the department for the balance. The bad state of Easlport Road was brought up and the chairman said that the engineer had the matter in hand and was making improvements with as much haste as possible. A deputation asked that the whdWe of the Hereone settlers lie called upon to pay their rates in order that necessary work could be done. The members of tho deputation stated that they were quite willing to pay their rates arid could do so if all the other settlers were compelled to meet their obligations. In his reply tho chairman stated that the council would hestjji-atc to sue if it, had the power to do so, but there was some doubt as to whether it had that power. He gave an assurance that, something could be done to the road serving the settlers before winter, if, us was believed, £l5O was available from the department. On the motion of Mr. Whiteclnuch it was decided to construct a mile and a half of tho Awaili Road out of riding funds. In regard to a desire that art alteration in the boundary of tho Tahuna and Morrinsville Ridings should be given effect to on April 1, it was pointed out that to do this a decision should have been arrived at in October, The county representative on a hospital board, Mr. A. L. Wagstaff, attended to reply to recent criticism with regard to levies for capital expenditure. Ho pointed out that tho levy did not show any increase on the average for the past three or four years. Tho misunderstanding was probably due (o a proposal put forward that the additional cost of the To Kuiti Hospital (£3500) should be raised by levy in one year. The board had decided on a four-ycfirs period.
