THE FACTORIES ACT.
WOMEN WORKING OVERT! ME. PRINTING COMPANY FINED. Two charges of breaches of the Factories Act were preferred against Arthur Cleave and Company, Limited, printers (Mr. Lux ford), in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. J. Hollows, inspector of awards, prosecuted. The allegations were that defendants employed women for more than eight and a-quarter hours on one day without obtaining a permit from the inspector of factories, and that women were employed for more than four and a-quarter hours without an interval of at least threequarters of an hour for a meal. Regarding the first charge, Mr. Luxford said the total amount of overtime worked by the women amounted only to six or eight hours. A permit had been obtained, but the names of two of the employees concerned had been omitted by error. A plea of guilty would be entered to the second charge. In that case two employees had exceeded the time limit at their own request, the company being very busy at the time. A fine of £1 and 7s costs was inflicted on each charge. EMPLOYEE UNDEK AGE. METAL WORKER'S OFFENCE. A sheet- metal worker, W. H. Bond, was prosecuted for two broaches of the Factories Act. Fines of £1 and 7s costs were inflicted on charges of failing to keep a wages and time book, and of employing a boy under the age of 16 without a certificate of fitness from the inspector of factories.
