CATERING FOR TOURISTS.
Sir, —The remarks rracle under the above heading in Tuesday's Herald suggest that it would be worth while for th« Government to have a travelling agent and a publicity department on each of the passenger steamers running between Canada and Now Zealand and America . and New Zealand. Everything pertaining to tourists!. search for. information would be obtainable at an office on board. Books such as year books, customs' tariffs, and copies of law Acts that would affect or likely to be of interest to the commercial or literary person could be available either on lean or for purchase. A small reading room would also be of some advantage. Having these, diey would in themselves be an advertising feature. Now that the shipping company has put on such stately vessels as the Aorangi and Niagara, its co-operation may be looked upon as assured. We all know that each tourist is valuable for not only what he or she spends, but (if sent away pleased) from the fact that they become potential ' boosters." We have already mail agents aboard these ships ; another co-operating Government department should be tasy. If too ambitious, pet haps the scheme may be reduced to meeting the ships at Suva, in somewhat the same manner as steamers for Vancouver are boarded at. Victoria, and steamers for Montreal at Quebec, by rail and shipping agents. It is of much importance that the outgoing passenger should be well supplied with information and literature, so that the passenger's acquired knowledge is spread in other countries. . Bbader.
