Sir,— "Ratepayer" makes a very definits statement when he speaks of tiie construction of Edendale Road as a " tremendous'' mistake," and refers to it 3.3 "this most expensive construction, which, in his judgment, " will go to pieces." All local authorities come m for their share of abuse at some time or other if they set out to achieve anything, and it seems a sad thing that there are always individuals' ever ready to condemn t--ie efforts of those who are publicspirited enough to want to serve their fellow citizens. Such unjust criticism usually comes from those who do not possess a complete working knowledge of things and your - correspondent evidently does not understand the form of construction which he so hurriedly condemns, 1101* does he even know apparently that the Mount Albert Borough Council has provided against the necessity for cutting up the new roadway by having both gas and water mains laid in the footpath oa both sides pf the street, while the electric mains are overhead. Even if there should be any necessity to open the roadway for any purpose, there is nothing more easily and successfully reinstated than asphalt if properly curried out. "Ratepayer" should not shelter behind a "nom de plume" if he has any sound criticism to make, but should have the courage to come out in the open and allow one to judge what, special qualifications he possesses for making the statements he does.
