It is one of those cases where guessing isi all that can be done. It appears that Mr. Donald McCallum, aged 34, the second engineer of the steamer Camlandia, from New York, with oil and general cargo, went ashore on Saturday night. He had a few glasses of beer with other officers and returned to the ship a little after 10 p.m. Then, being a hot night, he dis carded his coat, boots and socks, and sat yarning to several officers until nearly 12 o'clock. He was very cheerful and apparently happy, and turned in. At about 3 a.m. a fellow-officer went to his cabin for a cigarette, but found the cabin empty. , Nothing further was seen of Mr. McCallum. In the morning Me. M'cCallum's absenoe was imported to the captain, and after a careful search of the ship, the latter informed the police, who immediately made a careful search of the ship and the vicinity of the harbour, but in vain. A thorough search has since been made for the missing man, who was born in South* Africa, but .whose home is in Glasgow, where his wife lives. He was oily "recently married.
