Mr. William McKay and his wife, who live at 101, Waimairi Road, were awakened by the dog at 3.30. They smeiled smoke and rushed' out., to find the kitchen ablaze, and evidently having been burning for some time. 2 The house is in rather a lonely spot, without a water supply, and the services of the fire brigade. Mr. McKay and His wife had to stand by and watch their home being burned to the ground. All that was saved was the clothing in which they stood. ANOTHER CANINE ALARM. BURNED ANIMAL DESTROYED. . Awakened by the barking of their small dog, Mr. and Mrs. King, of Donald McLean Street, Newtown, found the house 'on fire, and narrowly escaped being caught in the flames. The fire apparently started in ; a lean-to at the back of the house, and the building and its contents were destroyed. Unfortunately the dog was so badly burned that it had to be destroyed. McNamara, and situated in Station Road, Paeroa, was totally destroyed by fire in the early hours this morning. Mr. McNamara, who was the only occupant, had to make a hurried exit in his night attire. Nothing was saved. The building and contents were insured for £700 in the Alliance office. The origin of the fire is unknown.
