STEAMER HELD IN PORT.
FREMANTLE STRIKE SETTLED.
Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.rn.) SYDNEY, Dec. 17.
Marine firemen yesterday caused the detention in port of the inter-State passenger steamer Cooma, which should have sailed at 4 p.m. When sailing time arrived it was discovered that five firemen were absent without leave. The sailing of the vessel was therefore postponed until to-day.
A full crew has now been obtained for the vessel.
In the Legislative Assembly, the Premier, Sir George Fuller, said he regretted the shipping labour bureau was to disappear, but he would see that preference under the Act was granted to returned sailor and soldier wharf labourers.
The secretary of the Returned Sailor and Soldier Wharf Labourers' Union states that legal proceedings are to be taken against companies who refuse to give bureau members preference.
At the conclusion of a meeting of seamen at Perth, it was announced that a settlement had been reached in the shipping striko at Fremantle. In some instances tug employees are to receive increases in their wages of £2 a week.
