RESCUE OF A COMRADE. RECENT QUARRY ACCIDENT. GIFTS FROM CITY -COUNCIL.'* ■ At the meeting of the City Council ,last ' evening three members of the council's quarry staff, Messrs. E. Roberts, W. Friar and T. Mulholland, were each presented with a handsome silver tea service in recognition of the part they to.k in the rescue of a quarryman, Mr. R.J. Hawkes, at the Mount Eden quarry on November 12 in the face of considerable danger from exploding charges of dynamite. The Mayor, Sir James Gunson, in making the presentations, said the council felt that it-would like to offer a token of its deep appreciation of the courageous act of. these men. They had counted their lives not too dear that they might render assist- - - anco to a comrade. Members of the coun. cil were' proud to know that there were i such men on the staff. He sincerely conj gratulated them and expressed a hope for their future happiness. Each of the sets bore the following in. scription:—"Presented to — by the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Auckland in recognition of conspicuous bravery displayed at the Council's quarry, Mount Eden, on November 12, 1924." 1..
