CAR UNLAWFULLY TAKEN.
TWO YOUNG MEN FINED.
PAYMENT FOR DAMAGE DONE.
Two young men, for whom Mr. Cahill appeared, pleaded not guilty when charged in the Police Court yesterday with having converted a motor-car to their uses without the sanction of the owner.
Constable Wilson said both men had made statements that they .ere. acquainted with the owner. Thv'y called at her hotel and seeing her motoi-car out side decided to enjoy a short ride. They drove to Customs Street where engine trouble necessitated the abandonment of the car.
Mr. Cahill submitted no offence had been committed. He said one. of the men had tried to communicate with the owner and advise her he had taken the car.
Chief-Detective Cummings said damage, to the extent of £7 10s had been suffered by the car while it was in the hands of accused.
Mr. Poynton: They showed callous indifference to the fate of the lady's car. Each accused was fined £10, and ordered to make good the damage. An order for thn suppression of names was granted.
