NEW TAXI CHARGES
RATES FIXED BY COUNCIL. BY TIME AND DISTANCE. * « TAXIMETER SCALE FIXED. Amended scales of taxi fares and taximeter charges were adopted by the City Council last evening. The taxi rates fixed were as follow:— By Distance.—For one, mile for one or two passengers, 2s 6d; for every additional passenger beyond two, Is; for every additional mile or fraction thereof for one to four passengers, Is 3d; for each additional passenger above four, per mile, 3d; detention for every five minutes or fraction thereof, 6d. Tho distance to be charged for shall not include the return of the car to the stand.
By Time.—Up to four passengers at per hour, including return to stand, running time only, 15s; for each additional passenger per hour, 2s 6d; detention for every five minutes or fraction thereof, 6d. For the period from midnight to 6 a.m. the above amounts may be increased by one-
half. The person hiring shall have tho option of hiring either by time or distance, but if he does not elect at the time of hiring to exercise such option of hiring by time, then the hiring shall be considered and charged as a hiring by distance. An amended scale of fares for taximeters was also adopted. This scale was previously recommended by the Finance and Legal Committee for adoption, but was dropped owing to the non-use of meters in Auckland. The scale was resubmitted following a request from a carowner who proposed installing a taximeter.
