WHANGAREI FINANCE.

THE SEWERAGE DIFFICULTY

OTHER PROPOSALS AFFECTED.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORESPONDENT. ,1 WHANGAEEI. Wednesday.

Ratepayers of Whangarei realise that in

(he near future they will be faced with the necessity of obtaining a loan to finance the rectification of fhe overloading ot the sewerage system in the northern part of

the borough. That being so, many have

signified dissent from tho proposal to go in for loans of £7100 for municipal swimming baths and £5000 as a contribution toward the cost of an overhead railway, which tho department purposes making to obviate the level crossings at Walton and Water Streets and Rust Lane, primarily to enable trains to use speed through the town. The suggestion that the borough should contribute £5000 is traceable to a declaration at a meeting of the Chandler of Commerce that it would pay Whangarei to bear half the cost to obviate the

danger of tho three level crossings. It was made at a time when the department was obviously negotiating with the Borough Council with a view to providing the overhead railway unassisted. Indications of opposition led to the DeputyMayer calling a special meeting of the council on Monday, when a motion was brought forward that the proposal for tho swimming baths be deferred. Mr. L. J. Brake pointed out that notice was necessary, consequently both proposals will go to a poll. The council decided to hold a public meeting to explain the position regarding the loans from tho council's point* of view, some members expressing the opinion that as they were pledged to bring forward the baths proposal, they desired to throw the responsibility of its acceptance or rejection upon tho ratepayers.
