SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.
THE TOWN AND THE COUNTRY
SPECIAL FAVOURS OPPOSED.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— rRBSS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. iVednesday.
At the meeting of the Education Board, Mr. White moved that the granting 'of special favours (holidays) to city children is unfair, and opposed to the best interests of the whole of the children; that the action of the chairman and secretary in conniving at breaking of the board's by-laws is deserving of censure. The mover pointed out the discrepancy between holidays granted to country and city Bchool children. Country children were given one holiday for a local show, but not more; but in the city, a special holiday was granted during the month of November, when conditions were unsuitable for holidays.
In seconding tho first part of the motion, Mr. Condon regretted any deprecation thai might be inferred from Mr' White's allusion to a holiday granted to city schools on the departure of Lord Jellicoe. Mr. R. A. Wright, Mayor of Wellington, strongly deprecated the motion as a reflection on Lord Jellicoe, who had a great affection for children, among whom ho was exceedingly popular. Other members spoke in similar strain, and the motion was lost, Mr. White alone voting for it.
