CROSSBRED VALUES.

RATES PAID AT NAPIER. SLIGHT DECLINE SHOWN. SALE BRIGHTER AT CLOSE. OTHER CLASSES VERY FIRM. [BY. TELEGRAPH. —OV.'N CORRESSPONDENI'. ] NAPIER. Wednesday. The second wool sale of the season to be held in Napier opened last night and continued throughout to-day, finishing late this evening. There was a very 'large attendance of the public, including farmers from all over the Hawke's Bay, Wairoa, and Poverty Bay districts. On the buyers' benches was a full attendance, representing American, English, Continental and British interests, but the elastic limits that characterised the opening Napier sale had apparently been rigidly tightened, and, generally speaking, prices had eased off since the last Hawke's Bay wool was offered on November 21. The decline was marked by a. fallingoS approaching 2d per lb. on the medium wools, which comprised the bulk of many offerings. Other classes showed firm rates, or even a tendency to rise, but over the whole range of prices the tone was hardly so buoyant as it -/.as three weeks ago. Nevertheless present prices still represent a return extrem.il/ satisfactory to the producer. When the sale opened this mormng bidding was somewhat spiritless.' Only occasionally did the buyers shovr noteworthy eagerness to purchpse and there was no indication of any rise upon last night's prices. Most growers, however, were well content to accept .the verdict of the market and. few lota wore passed In some cases opening offers were slow in coming and occasionally the auctioneer in asking for a starting bid. suggested his idea of value, but only rarely did that idea coincide with the buyers opinions. As an,, instance, for one lot of pieces (four bales), the auctioneer suggested 18d. The bid from the buyers was 14d, and it advanced to 16£ d, which did. not .Teach the reserve, and: the offering was passed in. ,v,V An idea of the .trend of the bidding is given by the following random selection of ten lots of crossbred wool, for which ■■pnees-ran-, as follows :—2o±d, 22id, 22id, 203 d, 24d (passed in), 23* d (passed ink 22fd, 16£ d (pieces, passed in), 23£ d. The principal operators were again Bradford buyers. Not many crossbred clips, even of good class, realised over 26d, though the heavy condition of the wool is possibly largely accountable. „ Pieces, bellies,. etc., ranged from 15d to 17|d, according to quality. ■■ Toward the close of the afternoon bidding brightened, and there was an improved tone. Generally speaking, the position remains very little below what it was at the previous sale in November. The total offering was 213,377 bales..

ONLY TEN FER CENT. PASSEJD IN.

[BY TELEGRAJ H. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Wednesday. It is estimated that not more than ten per cent, of the wool ofiered at the Napier sale was passed in. In the circumstances the opinion locally is that the prices realised are satisfactory.
