RIVERHEAD NOTES.

WORKING SMALL, AREAS. [BY TJELEGBAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] RIVERHEAD.. Monday. Since the closing of the paper mills 12 months ago renewed interest has been . taken in the land by many of the small j landowners who previously worked in the 'mill. The returns being obtained; from • some of these holdings are imch as '.o show that with* proper treatment and the judicious use of suitable manures ' the gum- : lands of the district will give profitable .returns where comparatively small areas are worked. The pastures adjacent to the Riverhead-Kumeu Road would do credit to . any of the dairying districts further south. A certain amount of new land is

now being brought in and some fine takes "of grass are reported on lots which were sown down in the spring. The effort to replace low-producing stock with more profitable animals is being continued in this district as elsewhere and the great majority of farmers are taking advantage of the herd-testing service provided by v the Waitemata Cooperative Dairy to; Meetings of suppliers of - the . company were held at Fernleigh and Riverhead on Friday, and it is reported that the suppliers are well satisfied with the prospects lor the ueason as put before them by the directors. . Motions expressing continued loyalty and support were carried at both meetings. Work is proceeding satisfactorily in connection with the metalling of the Riverhead to Kumeu main road, although it could bo considerably speeded up if greater supplies of metal were available. At present the supplies are being drawn from Oakley, and Mount Eden, the transport from Riverhead and Kumeu being done by the council's plants. A new English tip truck arrived during the week and is enabling the present supply to be fullv coped with. A heavy motor roller is in operation consolidating the new work as it is done. While the roller is in the district it is thought that parts of that, portion of the road which was laid down last year should be scarified and put in . proper order before winter. The hiil at the Kumeu end greatly needs attention in this respect.
