Gillon, chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand Railways is : retiring on superannuation to-day. Mr. Gillon has had a long service in the employ of the department, having joined in 1884 at the age of 16 as an apprentice in the '; Hillside workshops, Dunedin. He gradii. &t ally worked his way up until in 1914 he "■■? was placed in charge of the Addington workshops and appointed assistant loco-'-motive engineer for the South Island. He" went to the head office at Wellington in 1915 and was appointed chief mechanical engineer in April, 1919.
