TARAWERA GOLD AREA.
RIGHTS OF PROSPECTING.
NATIVE INTERESTS PROTECTED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE. Friday.
An application was made yesterday by the Minister for Mines, on behalf of the Governor-General, to the Native Land Court sitting at Whakatane to dcclaro ccrtain blocks of native laud in the Tarawera gold discovery area open for prospecting, under the Mining Act, 1908. There was a large attendance of interested Maoris, and on behalf of the owners, Mr. Keyes, of Te Puke, lodged an objection, 011 the ground that if the land was thrown open for prospecting and holders of prospecting licenses were allowed to search for gold, it would cause confusion and loss to the natives, who had been engaged in the work of preliminary investigation. It was contended that the native owners should first be allowed a reasonable time in which to prospect the country before it was opened for general prospecting. The Court dismissed the Minister's application, without prejudice, however, to the prosecution of any further application that the Crown may see fit to make at any future time. In the meantime, some of the owners are going on with prospecting operations, and arc pursuing the search for the reef.
