MUIR'S GOLD REEFS.
PROGRESS REPORT-
During October, work at Muir's Gold lleefs was almost entirely confiued to the installation of the electric pumps and the unwatering of the mine. The enlargement of the pump-chamber and cistern at 280 It. down the shaft was completed, and tho stationary electric pump erected there. The rising main of this pump was also put in place. Guides and centres necessary for the operation of the electric sinking pump, were put in the pumping compartment of the shaft. The clectric transmission line to supply power to these pumps was completed, and tho armoured electric cables leading down the shaft to the pumps were connected. The unwatering of tho shaft was commenced at midnight on October 27, both pumps working well, and by 9 p.m. on October 30 the shaft and crosscuts wero emptied of water. An inspection of the crosscuts at 500tt. down the shaft showed that they had not suffered any serious damage as a result of being submerged. A few hours aftor draining the crosscuts the motor of the sinking pump developed trouble, owing to short-circuiting in a few places in the stator coils, but no serious damage had been done, and repairs are now nearly completed. Special measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence of the trouble.
