MILK UNDER REQUIREMENTS. HAMILTON VENDOR FINED, [DX XELEGKAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.] : • HAMILTON. Monday. ; ' A charge of selling milk with '8 per ] cent, of added water was erredi against i a milk vendor named James Wedlock (Mr. | MacDiarmicl), before Mr. H. A.; Young, S.M., to-day. Defendant first pleaded not;: guilty, but afterwards withdrew that plea. I The Public Health inspector, Mr. A. P. Bennett, gave evidence as to sending .a sample for analysis. The certificate showed that the milk contained 8 per cent, of added: water. Witness had ' known defendant :as - a milk vendor t0t,14 years and had taken samples of : his i milk frequently. : He had had no previous com-: plaint to make." • The milk '.complained of contained mora than : ; : the ; ; :- standard * of butter-fat required. . Witness had had no complaints from defendant's customers. ; : >; For defendant, ■ Mr. JMacDiarmid stated that he had not deliberately added , water. ■ Defendant did not know that the milk was not up to the standardi The sample' was deficient in solids other than butterfat to the extent of one-quarter : per : cent.' The magistrate : said that as' defendant had carried on business as a milk vendor for about 15 years, and : no'• previous complaint had been made concerning the quality of the milk he supplied, he did not think the case called,for a heavy penalty. The deficiency was not serious. However, all. milk vendors were : required to exer- ; cise the utmost care in seeing ■ that i the milk they supplied complied with ; the regulations. ~ :. ' A fine of £5 with costs was imposed. ■ -.v
