SEPARATE LAND RETURNS.
RESPONSIBILITY OF OWNERS. PROSECUTION AT WANGANUI, [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI, Monday. A farmer, Donald Ross, of Brunswick, was charged with failing to furnish to the commissioner of taxes before April 3, 1924, a return setting forth a complete statement of all land on which he was assessable for land tax. Defendant wrote admitting the offence, and stating that the matter of making up a. separate land return had not entered his mind. The Crown Prosecutor said the proceedings were brought with a view to getting persons in responsible positions to file their returns. He did not press for a heavy penalty, as he was sure there was.no intention to defraud.
A fine of £2, with costs and solicitor's fee (£3 3s), was imposed. .
