MOTOR-LORRY ACCIDENT.

SHOP FRONT DAMAGED.

VICTORIA STREET INCIDENT.

A heavy motor lorry, which crashed over the footpath- in Victoria Street East at about 1.30 p.m. yesterday, cansed considerable damage to. the one-storey building known as "The Little Tailor Shop." The incident created quite a stir in the vicinity, the occupants of neighbouring premises crowding out to discover the cause of the commotion.

The lorry, owned by Mr. W. 5. Moody, carrier, of Manurewa, and loaded with cases of benzine, had turned round at the top of Victoria Street prior to backing into the cart entrance just above the shop. According to the driver, however, the brakes failed to act, and the vehicle ran down the steep slope. The driver managed to avoid, by a narrow margin, a motor-car standing at the kerb, but the vehicle slewed round, mounted the footpath, and struck the front wall of the building rear on.

Although the truck itself was practically undamaged, the brick and concrete wall of the shop was staved partly in, the entire front of the building showing signs of having been severely shaken. An interior wooden partition was dislodged, and grave fears w r ere felt for the safety of the front part of the building. The premises, which are occupied by Mr. J. Moyes, tailor, form part of the Outhwaite property.
