A NEW BRICK AREA.

PROGRESS OF DRAINAGE WORKS.

Tho last meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr. R. B. Todd, and Messrs. T. Clements, E. Shepherd, J. W. Whyte, T. Whitelcy, J. Wilson, J. Brady, J. R, W. Nicholls and H. J. Hall. It was decided to declare Station Road, a brick area, with the same reservations as those affecting the Great South Road, in respect to business premises. The finance committee recommended that a public risk insurance policy be taken out to cover £1000. The recommendation was adoptedTho treasurer's report on the finances of the borough were adopted. The only account to show a debit balance was the district fund account, with £3016, which, since tho report was drafted, had been reduced by over £500. The greatest items of expenditure for the past six months had been:—Street maintenance, £570; waterworks maintenance, £1489; sanitation, £353; interest, £756; quarry, £362; hospital levy, £220; street lighting, £133. Tho engineer, Mr. Grcville . Walker, reported that sewers had been completed in Station Road, Clevedon Road, Walmsley Road, Seddon Terrace and Moa Street. The lengths of sewers laid to date were:— 387 ft, of 15in.; 289 ft, of 12in.; 1023 ft, of 9in.; 7780 ft, of 6in. Twenty-fivo manholes had been built and 1012 ft of 4in. house connections made. Mr. Walker reported on alternative scheme for the instalment of dechlorinating filters, one schemo to cost £3850, tho other £2388. Ho suggested tho adoption of tho latter scheme, tho filters to bo placed on the delivery drain. It was decided to defer consideration for one month, it being pointed out that a loan would have to bo sanctioned by the ratepayer's. It was decided to purchase a chip machine and hopper for £220. The road just formed; from the Station Road through Hall's Estate, was formally named Nikau Uoad.
