WHITE ISLAND SULPHUR.
COMPANY READY to START. CONTRACT SYSTEM ADOPTED. Arrangements, are well in hand for the' commencement of operations at White Island, where an English Company is preparing to work the immense sulphur deposits. Major Kent-Johnston, consulting engineer: and general manager of the company, left by the Matangi last evening for Opotiki en route to White Island, He expects to bo away from Auckland for about j three weeks, and while at tha bland I hopes to get the-work started. -
Major Kent-Johraston stated yesterday that herhad let a contract for the erection of a wharf, and that work was proceeding with the erection"'of the houses intended for the accommodation of the workers. He mentioned that it was the intention of the oompany to do all the work of getting out the sulphur by contract. He was unable to estimate the quantities the company would be able to produce but indicated that under the system proposed it wa3 expected that the best results would be obtained.
